MATCH PREVIEW

Few teams look forward to facing Stoke City but I doubt whether that applies to Wigan Athletic right now. Memories of last season's last-gasp escape with victory at the Britannia Stadium are still too fresh to raise anything other than a broad smile from even the most pessimistic Latics fan. Furthermore, Roberto Martinez's men are enjoying their best run of the campaign and games can't come quickly enough.

Beating Stoke might well be enough to lift Wigan out of the relegation zone for the first time since before Christmas

Last Saturday's first ever win at Liverpool may have surprised many but it has been coming. Recent draws against Norwich and WBA really should have brought victories; missed chances proving costly with two points yielded rather than six.
Now the task is to maintain that momentum and that means picking up their first home win in seven months! Beating Stoke might well be enough to lift Wigan out of the relegation zone for the first time since before Christmas. What a boost that would be ahead of a challenging schedule that has Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal next on their fixture list.
Stoke are now a well-established and respected top-flight club, and their aim must be their highest ever Premier League finish - and that means breaking into the top 10. It should be an achievable goal and just reward for another brilliant effort by Tony Pulis and his team.
What is surely in no doubt is that Stoke have already won one coveted prize - the Premier League's Goal of the Season after 'that' strike by Peter Crouch a week ago. Ironically, goals have been in short supply for them this season (29). In fact only one team has scored fewer: Wigan (27). So perhaps I shouldn't expect a goal-fest at the DW Stadium but it will be a fascinating contrast of styles and maybe another step towards an incredible third great escape for the Premier League's smallest club.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head
Five of the seven Premier League encounters between the sides have been drawn, including three that have ended 2-2.
Wigan are unbeaten in their last five against the Potters - all since Roberto Martinez took charge.
Wigan
Wigan have lost only one of their last seven league matches and taken 10 points in the process.
Athletic are seeking back-to-back league wins under Roberto Martinez for just the second time. The other occasion came in May last season when they won their final two league games to stay up, the last of which came against Stoke.
The Latics have won just one league game at home all season, against QPR back in August. Only Sunderland (2005-06) and Derby (2007-08) have gone through a Premier League season winning at home just once - both were ultimately relegated.
Roberto Martinez is one Premier League defeat away from his 50th as Wigan boss.
Stoke
The Potters have lost only one of their last five games and taken eight points from 15 during this period.
Stoke are without an away win in five league matches since they won 2-1 at Blackburn in January.
City have had fewer attempts (282) than any other team in the Premier League this season - exactly half of that total have been on target.
Tony Pulis' men have drawn their last two Premier League matches; they last drew three consecutive league games between November and December 2008.
