MATCH PREVIEW

It's hard to know which of these two troubled sides have a greater need for victory. Logically of course Blackburn's plight means their very survival hangs on every precious point, but Liverpool's own subplot of recent baffling underachievement means they too can't simply view this game as a pre-Wembley warm-up.
Three weeks ago Tuesday's hosts had seemingly given themselves some breathing space as a three-match unbeaten run helped elevate them six points above the drop zone. Three straight defeats later and they've been dragged back into it again.

Liverpool would certainly be forgiven for prioritising their Wembley meeting with Everton over a Tuesday night duel at Blackburn.

With time running out Rovers have to view a game against a seemingly out of form opposition as an opportunity not to be passed up. After all they've secured more points, scored more goals and won more league matches than the Reds in 2012.
A quick look at their remaining fixtures highlights the significance of the meeting. Their final three away games take them to Swansea, Tottenham and Chelsea, while a visit from a tension-free Norwich and a nerve --jangler against Wigan complete their Amex schedule.
Rovers' recent home form also offers encouragement, with 10 points accumulated from their last six played there, while Liverpool arrive off the back of four away defeats in a row and with that Merseyside FA Cup semi-final showdown looming large.
Though professional players aren't supposed to think beyond the immediate challenge that's presented to them, Liverpool's would certainly be forgiven for prioritising their Wembley meeting with Everton over a Tuesday night duel at Blackburn.
That said a seventh defeat in nine Premier League games would hardly be the ideal way to prepare for such an enormous occasion.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head
This is the 90th competitive match-up; Reading have won 33 and Brighton 28 of the previous 89.
A Jobi McAnuff brace and an own goal from Adam El-Abd gave Reading a comfortable 3-0 win in the reverse fixture on Boxing Day, which took the Royals' winning run against the Seagulls to five.
It is 10 years since Brighton last completed a home win over the Berkshire club.
Brighton & Hove Albion
Two draws and a defeat in their last three games saw Brighton slip out of the play-off zone. But they would take closer order if they could complete a home double against the top two, having already beaten Southampton 3-0 at the Amex Stadium.
The Seagulls are undefeated in nine home Championship games, having won six and drawn three, since losing to Burnley on 17 December.
Gus Poyet's side have kept clean sheets in half their home league games; 10 of 20.
Reading
Reading's stay at the summit of the Championship table for the first time in six years lasted a little over 24 hours, as they were deposed by Southampton. Now they are looking to maintain their push for automatic promotion back to the Premier league, last graced in 2006.
Brian McDermott's club, who have won 12 of the last 14 matches including the most recent three, are aiming to become the first club to win 25 Championship games this season.
If selected, Hayden Mullins will be making his 600th club career appearance.
